Obesity is a hazardous condition and prevention is a major player in powering your body’s defense against a number of diseases, which include cancer and heart disease.  Each of us understands the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise.  What some of us may not know is that there are alternative therapies that may also be beneficial to preventing obesity.

Obesity Risk Factors

The definition of obesity is a body mass index of 30 or higher.  The reason for obesity is that the body consumes more calories than it uses.  While some risk factors due to obesity like genetics cannot be controlled there are some risk factors that you can control, which include:

        · Lack of physical activity

        · Unhealthy diet

        · Poorly managed stress

        · Insufficient sleep

Preventing obesity is crucial for the health of the individual.  When you prevent obesity, you are preventing health / medical conditions and problems, such as:

        · Cancers of the kidney, esophagus, uterus, and gallbladder

        · Colon cancer

        · Gallbladder disease

        · Arthritis

        · High blood pressure

        · Type 2 diabetes

        · Stroke

        · Heart disease

When you first begin your exercise routine, shoot for two and a half hours of moderately intense aerobic activity, such as, brisk walking, every week.  Twice a week engage in strength training exercises, as well.

Experts also recommend that you keep a food diary- this helps you to be aware of what you put into your mouth.  Also, get eight hours of sleep each night, as this will help to keep your energy levels in tune, which means less fatigue, and which will keep your stress to a minimum. 

Alternative therapies and mind body exercises can also help to prevent obesity and support weight loss. 

Yoga is a wonderful exercise and is a wonderful way to help prevent obesity.  This is according to various studies that have been performed on middle-age and older adults.

The results of studies performed in 2009 concluded that acupuncture is an effective treatment for obesity.  Participants in 31 studies experienced body weight and improvement in obesity.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi studies performed in 2009 also concluded that Tai Chi does help to reduce body fat percentage, according to the results of 21 obese women who participated in a 10 week weight management course. 

Obesity is a problem throughout the world.  If you are considering an alternative medicine for obesity prevention or to help with a current obesity problem, it is essential to first consult your doctor before beginning any treatment or program.
